Finesse your stayWith its honey-stone façade, long gravel approach and manicured topiary, there’s a charmingly bucolic atmosphere as you approach Church View. Look beyond the timehonoured exterior, however, and a more contemporary mood emerges: pared-back design, six restful bedrooms and generous spaces designed for coming together. Originally built in 1605 beside a Grade-I listed 13th-century church, the house has centuries of history behind it, plus 1.8 acres of private gardens and a heated pool to put you at one with nature.
What’s included?
7-night stay from: £20,000 – £30,000
3-night stay from: £10,300 – £15,500
Understated interiors set a calming tone indoors, with soft carpets, luxe sofas and modern pendant lighting. There’s plenty of room to gather for a catch-up or claim a favourite corner for slower afternoons with a book. When the temperature drops, two wood burners come into their own; elsewhere, a dedicated games room gives younger guests somewhere to play.
South-facing and filled with afternoon light, the dining room makes a persuasive case for lingering over lunch. A contemporary chandelier and upholstered chairs bring a touch of occasion, while next door, the kitchen has all the high-spec essentials and preparation space needed to feed a crowd.
Six bedrooms – including two en suites – offer a welcome change of pace after days spent exploring the surrounding countryside. Modern beds, pared-back furnishings and garden views keep things restful, complemented by sleek bathrooms.
The heated pool is a summertime centrepoint, its azure water set against the green of the gardens and a scattering of loungers for those who prefer their swimming with a side of sunbathing. Outdoor dining furniture sets the scene for weekend brunches, barbecues and evening drinks. Beyond the pool, wander through the walled gardens, past fountains and water features, or follow the lawns towards the surrounding bridleways.
Church View sits in the village of Burton, with its much-loved Farm Shop within walking distance for fresh produce, rustic breakfasts and afternoon tea. Beyond the village, the surrounding countryside is made for long walks and leisurely bike rides, with a detour to Castle Combe, often counted among the Cotswolds’ prettiest villages. For woodland wanders and seasonal colour, head to Westonbirt Arboretum; for a dose of history, Lacock Abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum offer a glimpse into the early days of photography. Bath is also within driving distance, with Georgian architecture, historic thermal baths, independent shops and a lively cultural scene. Come evening, book a table at one of the city’s destination restaurants, from The Olive Tree to Menu Gordon Jones or The Chequers.
