There’s a quietly nomadic charm to the dining area, set beneath timber beams and surrounded by textured plaster walls and exposed woodwork. Natural light pours through a double-height recess, while a picture window frames leafy woodland views beyond. Stainless steel cabinetry lends an industrial edge to the kitchen, which remains streamlined and understated; its sleek worktops and contemporary appliances designed for culinary creativity.
Fusing the past with the present. The charming framework of this 300-year-old cottage has been sensitively restored to create an idiosyncratic countryside retreat.
A year-round retreat to slow down, switch off and reconnect with nature.
Nestled within the protected woodland of Fishpool Valley, on the National Trust’s Croft Castle estate, this sylvan setting is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, abundant birdlife and enchanting forest scenery. Here, a thoughtful fusion of old and new emerges: an 18th-century cottage sensitively transformed into a contemporary two-bedroom retreat.
The original structure, with its rich timber, exposed brickwork and lofty proportions, has been beautifully reimagined by Kate Darby Architects and David Connor Design. Pioneering sustainability measures ensure year-round comfort, including a highly insulated outer shell, triple-glazed windows, wood-burning stoves fuelled by timber from the surrounding woodland, and photovoltaic panels that generate electricity from the south-facing roof. Beneath the black corrugated iron roof, glycol-filled piping acts as a solar collector, providing hot water during the summer months.

Bedrooms & bathrooms
A bold metal staircase winds upwards to two serene bedrooms. One occupies a mezzanine level, where the home’s material palette ensues with rustic plaster, sturdy beams and layers of exposed timber and brick. The second bedroom sits beneath a vaulted ceiling illuminated by a Velux window. A stable door opens onto the living space below, creating a sense of connectivity throughout. Designed with contemporary comfort in mind, the bathrooms are modish and modern, featuring pale blue tiling and sleek fittings.
Outside space
Set within 1,450 acres of woodland and lakes, the surrounding landscape is utterly immersed in nature. The garden itself is verdant and charming, with flowering plants and outdoor seating areas for quiet moments outdoors. Beyond, Fishpool Valley awaits exploration. Designed in the late 18th century according to the principles of the Picturesque movement, the landscape is threaded with dams, pools and carefully planted oak, ash, willow and poplar trees. In spring, bluebell woods add to the area’s pastoral beauty.
The surroundings
Set within the tranquil landscapes of north Herefordshire, this corner of the county is defined by ancient woodland and centuries of architectural heritage. Nearby Leominster retains much of its medieval character, with narrow streets and a coveted antiques scene, while the celebrated Black and White Village Trail winds through some of England’s most picturesque Tudor villages – explored on foot or by bike . Queenswood Country Park’s arboretum is beautiful for forested walks, as well as the routes through Mortimer Country and along Offa’s Dyke. As evening falls, low levels of light pollution make for exceptional stargazing. For dining, The Baiting House and The Bull’s Head showcase the best of Herefordshire’s local produce, while 33 The Homend offers a Michelin-starred experience for special occasions.
