On the doorstep of storybook meadows and woodland, time-worn stone and slate give way to playfully exuberant interiors at Court Cottage and estate-wide wellness amenities that elevate.

Comparatively cosier than the palatial 18th-century manor house it sits alongside, Court Cottage’s offering belies its size. Beyond its honeyed walls, there’s the option to book dedicated spa treatments, yoga sessions and sauna rituals in the neighbouring barns – if you can tear yourself away from the living room’s cavernous wood burner, that is.

Togetherness has inspired the cottage’s configuration, with inviting open-plan communal spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and countless seating configurations. Shut off from the world entirely for a long-weekend, a week or more here – or call on the services of an on-site housekeeper, chef and fitness specialists to tailor-make a stay to remember.

What’s included?

  • Housekeeping services and private chef by arrangement
  • Customisable wellness packages and activities

The living spaces

A spectrum of primary colours adds punch to the open-plan interiors. There’s warmth, too, emanating far beyond the reach of the Godin wood burner poised for toasty winter nights. Interior design by the owner using local studio Upstairs Downstairs Interiors has infused every surface with textural richness, from the mismatched floral and stripped upholstery to the marine blue and post-box red ottomans.

Wooden floors span the length of the space, which is carved into zones for socialising and stepping aside. A pair of armchairs, each with an accompanying reading lamp and foot stool creates a cosy reading nook. Dialling up the ambiance further, half a dozen more lamps are dotted around, resulting in an atmospheric glow as the daylight fades.

Kitchen & dining

The kitchen is rustic – think classic styling meets contemporary synchronicity. Worn flagstones in slate grey pop against blue cabinetry and charcoal black worktops. Around the corner, an upholstered banquet seat wrapped in vibrant diamond print fabric occupies an entire corner, encased within a blue wooden frame. An oak topped table accompanies, illuminated by striking pendant lights.

If the occasion calls, the banqueting barn next door can seat 30 under its lofty vaulted ceiling. Old oak beams and exposed brick dial up the ambiance, while an adjoining professional kitchen is specially designed for private chefs to cater for a crowd.

Bedrooms & bathrooms

Personality and a sense of retreat are writ large over all four bedrooms. Finishes are sumptuous –from hand-painted wallpaper to locally woven linen and British-made mattresses. On the ground floor, a decadent suite is covered in intricate floral motifs. Fabrics and upholstery continue the theme of soft pinks, burnished orange and rust tones. The en suite shower room is just as colourful; jewel toned harlequin patterns cover the floors, and blue and yellow tiles encase the shower.

The upstairs trio of bedrooms is exuberant – each of which can be configured as a twin or double as required. Two quiet spaces sit beneath the beamed eaves, while a second suite is finished is lush green. A family bathroom completes the line-up – where mosaic tiles backdrop a roll top bath and separate shower.

Outside space

With Dorset horn sheep grazing on the fields, the wider estate paints a picture-perfect pastoral scene. Majestic spreading Holm oaks and a castellated yew hedge add natural structure to abundant grounds landscaped by Keith Anderson. Ramble through the long-grassed orchard and wild gardens or unwind with a few laps of the heated swimming pool tucked within its own walled garden.

The cottage’s covered porch is perfect for booting up for bracing walks. Just opposite, there’s an outdoor dining area for al fresco nights. The treatment barn and spa are just a few steps away, well positioned for padding over in a robe and slippers.

Wellness & leisure

Restorative wellness rituals are an integral part of the experience here. Inspired by the rejuvenating setting, a team of therapists, longevity specialists and trainers applies a holistic approach to health and fitness.

On request, begin and end the day with invigorating fire and ice routines, dipping between traditional Japanese onsen baths and a spectacular sauna. Ease tension and restore balance with a massage in the dedicated spa or unlock a detailed health profile with a comprehensive blood analysis. Meanwhile, a soaring barn provides an underfloor-heated hub for matt-based and aerial yoga, gym classes, breath workshops, sound healing or meditation in front of the roaring fire.

The surroundings

The county of Somerset is on your doorstep here. Follow the hiking trails from the estate to the picturesque town of Somerton, the former capital of Wessex. This is a place of epic history, first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 773.  Make a pitstop at family-run Alfredo’s for venetian cicchetti. Brave cold-water swimming at Lulworth Cove, trace the Jurassic coastline, or ramble up the ramparts of Maiden Castle, an expansive Iron Age hillfort dating from the 1st century BC. If you tire of the estate’s 35 acres, jump in the car to Exmoor National Park, where some 265 square miles of open moorland and ancient woodland await. Come evening, book a table at Osip in nearby Bruton, a gastronomic destination that’s put Somerset on the culinary map.

Glastonbury is just up the road, which is music to the ears of festival goers who want to forego camping. When the city calls, London is only one hour 30 minutes away by train, while the Jurassic Coast and Bath are both a 60-minute drive in either direction.
