from £2,900-£4,300 / night

Set back from the Salcombe Estuary just south of Kingsbridge, this nine-bedroom Georgian manor looks out over one of the most celebrated stretches of water in the south west – where creeks and green hillsides give way to open sea.

HÁM Interiors has honored the home’s 18th-century roots, threading through it a spirit that’s decidedly alive. A sauna for cold mornings, a kitchen garden stretching towards the hills and a self-contained cottage set within the grounds. Plus, private estuary access within walking distance to cross by boat to Salcombe and beyond.

The living spaces

Inside, a unique pairing presents from the onset. Regal details and proportions meet more homely design – marble flagstone floors and stone busts are softened with bucolic artwork and oddities. The principal drawing room is your base here, a grand room eased by furnishings that come ready to sink into. A marble fireplace draws the sofas in; sash windows frame nothing but rolling South Devon hills.

The second sitting room takes a more intimate turn. Muted teal walls are adorned with a gallery of found objects, from wildlife prints and wooden boat models to antique maps. A vast velvet corner sofa and low-level lighting ensure it’s set up to soothe – on laid-back days indoors or quiet evenings in. Elsewhere, a snug continues the cosy thread. Walls in inky teal are painted from floor to ceiling, shelves are stacked with leather-bound books and an armchair is set beside the open fire. The study also offers versatility to be set up with a nursery with a cot.

Kitchen & dining

The main kitchen is a dream to cook in and socialise. Soft sage-green cabinetry runs beneath marble worktops; an Aga awaits eager chefs. The splashback depicts sailing boats and sea creatures, lending the room a farmhouse ease. A second kitchen – part scullery, part prep room – is painted in a rich terracotta, featuring a range cooker, sink and additional ovens.

Elsewhere, the dining room makes a case for the home’s most theatrical space – a rich room in burnished amber-ochre. Conversation starting pieces are in plentiful supply: elaborate plasterwork overhead, a painted antique armoire and an iron chandelier.

Bedrooms & bathrooms

Nine bedrooms are located across the estate – six in the main house and two found in a self-contained cottage. From soft sage to pale peach, each features its own character and style; all share a commitment to handcrafted textiles and original artwork. All bathrooms feature equally exceptional design: think rolltop tubs, Carrara marble showers and antique towel rails.

The Cottage

Set within the estate’s grounds, a charming two-bedroom cottage offers additional privacy for guests or accompanying staff. A cosy reception room invites curling up by the log burner; a quaint country kitchen looks out to green hills. Two bedrooms are thoughtfully set up, served by a shower room and cloakroom.

Outdoor space

Outdoors, the grounds are as carefully considered as the rooms within. A walled kitchen garden produces vegetables and herbs against a backdrop of Devon hills; an outdoor kitchen is primed to prep or cook at your leisure. Make use of a built-in BBQ, outdoor firepit and Big Green Egg, before settling in on the terrace. After, stretches of green offer room to ramble. Elsewhere, additional amenities encourage wellness – including a sauna, and soon to be installed cedar hot tub and cold plunge.

The design

Country house traditionalists converge. This revived historic home offers a playful take on its heritage, courtesy of design studio HÁM Interiors. Merging classic country design with jovial notes, Scoble House feels curated throughout with a spirited side.

The surroundings

Estuary House sits just south of Kingsbridge, bordering the Salcombe Estuary. The house’s private jetty puts Salcombe itself within minutes by boat: independent shops, excellent eateries and some of the finest beaches on the south coast. A short walk leads to the Millbrook Inn – famed for its summer barbecues – or the public pontoon at South Pool is easily accessible by foot or car, an ideal spot to moor a boat and explore the estuary directly. In Salcombe, start the day with a walk and pastries from The Bake House, before heading to Crab Shed – the go-to for fresh seafood on the marina. In warmer weather, stroll along North Sands or Small’s Cove, paddleboard along the Estuary or try your hand at sailing. Salcombe Gin offers unique distillery experiences – learn how to handcraft and distill your very own bottle of gin or try a tutored tasting in the waterside bar. The South West Coast Path runs in both directions with dramatic views: venture to Bolt Head or Snapes Point for headland and estuary scenery. The wider South Devon coast – Slapton Sands, Bantham and the Kingsbridge estuary system – is all on the doorstep.
